Sheep's wool and natural loft insulation
Natural loft insulation uses sheep's wool, wood fibre or hemp instead of glass or rock mineral wool. It is laid the same way, between and then across the joists, and it can handle moisture without losing performance as quickly, which is why it is often chosen for older, solid-walled houses.

What is sheep's wool or natural loft insulation?
Sheep's wool and wood fibre are vapour-open and can take up and release moisture. In an older house with lime plaster ceilings that helps keep the build-up breathable. They are also pleasant to handle. The trade-off is cost: natural materials usually cost two to three times as much as mineral wool for the same performance.
Is it right for your loft?
- Period houses with lath-and-plaster or lime ceilings
- Homes where you want to avoid itchy mineral fibres
- Owners who prefer renewable or recycled materials
- Lofts where moisture management matters
How we do it
- We check the ceiling below for weak plaster before anyone kneels on the joists.
- We confirm the depth needed for the product chosen, as natural materials differ.
- The first layer fills each bay, the second runs across the joists.
- Eaves ventilation is kept open and any services are protected.
What is included
- Sheep's wool or wood fibre to the agreed performance
- Crawl boards so weak ceilings are not loaded
- Eaves kept clear
Worth knowing
Natural insulation is not automatically better. In a modern house with plasterboard ceilings and a felted roof, mineral wool does the same job for much less. We will tell you which we would choose for your loft.
How much does sheep's wool or natural loft insulation cost?
Installing insulation in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 and 5% after that, under HMRC's rules for energy-saving materials (notice 708/6).
Do the rules differ across the UK?
Yes, a little. Building regulations and funding schemes are set separately in each nation. Here is the short version; each area page has the detail.
| Nation | Building rules | Funding to check |
|---|---|---|
| England | Approved Document L; insulation alone is not usually notified | ECO4 to 31 Dec 2026; Warm Homes Plan and Warm Homes: Local Grant |
| Wales | Welsh Approved Document L; conversions need building control | Warm Homes Nest; ECO4 to 31 Dec 2026 |
| Scotland | No building warrant normally needed; standards still apply | Home Energy Scotland grant and loan; Warmer Homes Scotland |
| Northern Ireland | NI Building Regulations (Technical Booklet F1); check with council building control | Affordable Warmth Scheme; NISEP |
Questions about sheep's wool or natural loft insulation
Is sheep's wool insulation worth the extra cost?
In an older breathable house, or if you care about the material, often yes. In a modern semi with plasterboard ceilings the extra cost buys little performance.
Do moths eat sheep's wool insulation?
Insulation-grade sheep's wool is treated against insects. We use products sold for loft insulation, not raw fleece.
How deep does natural insulation need to be?
It depends on the product's thermal conductivity. Some need slightly more depth than mineral wool to reach the same U-value, which we allow for on the quote.
