Loft insulation grants check
A loft insulation grants check looks at whether your household is likely to qualify for a funded scheme and points you to the organisation that runs it. Funding depends on where you live, your income or benefits, the home's EPC rating and the schemes open at the time, and they change often.

What does a grants check involve?
We quote for privately paid work. Funded schemes must be delivered by installers registered for that scheme, so if you look likely to qualify we will tell you before quoting, and send you to the official route for your nation. If you do not qualify, a privately paid loft job is one of the cheapest energy improvements there is.
Who might qualify?
- You receive a means-tested benefit
- Your household income is low
- Your home has an EPC rating of D or below
- You rent from a private landlord who is improving the property
How we do it
- You answer a few questions on the form or by phone.
- We check the schemes open in your nation and area.
- We tell you which look worth applying to, and how.
- If none apply, we give you a privately paid price.
What is included
- Free eligibility check against current schemes
- Links to the official scheme for your nation
- A fixed private quote if you want one
Worth knowing
Be cautious of cold calls offering free insulation. Check any offer against the official scheme website before giving personal details.
Does a grants check cost anything?
Installing insulation in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 and 5% after that, under HMRC's rules for energy-saving materials (notice 708/6).
Do the rules differ across the UK?
Yes, a little. Building regulations and funding schemes are set separately in each nation. Here is the short version; each area page has the detail.
| Nation | Building rules | Funding to check |
|---|---|---|
| England | Approved Document L; insulation alone is not usually notified | ECO4 to 31 Dec 2026; Warm Homes Plan and Warm Homes: Local Grant |
| Wales | Welsh Approved Document L; conversions need building control | Warm Homes Nest; ECO4 to 31 Dec 2026 |
| Scotland | No building warrant normally needed; standards still apply | Home Energy Scotland grant and loan; Warmer Homes Scotland |
| Northern Ireland | NI Building Regulations (Technical Booklet F1); check with council building control | Affordable Warmth Scheme; NISEP |

Can I get free loft insulation?
Some households can, through schemes funded by government or energy suppliers. Eligibility depends on your nation, income or benefits and your home. We check for free.
Do you install under ECO4 or other funded schemes?
Not at present. Funded work must be carried out by installers registered for that scheme. We will point you to the right route first.
Do you install under the Affordable Warmth Scheme or NISEP?
Not at present. Those schemes use their own approved installers. We will point you to the right route first.
Is there VAT on loft insulation?
Installing insulation in a home is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%, under HMRC rules for energy-saving materials.
